Munnar

There are other beautiful places in the Kerala Western Ghats, like Mattupatti, Vandiperiyar etc. Even Wynad is more beautiful. Reaching Wynad may have to be from Mysore or from Calicut or Kannur. There is no train service available. If you locate a good lodging house they may pick you up from the plains and provide you with excellant stay and food. There are many trecking tracks to some caves of aborigins. Mananthawady, Sulthan's Battery, Vythiri are some of the favourite destinations. There is a papanashini water falls where you can perform puja to the ancestors and wash away all your sins. Winter months from September to March are the ideal time to visit Wynad.

Shame on us.

One day I was driving to Varapuzha late in the night to drop a friend of mine at his residence. In one of the deserted street corners, I saw a person lying in the road with his bike nearby. If he is in danger there is no possibility of somebody noticing it and picking him and give him medical attention. My friend who was in the car told me not to bother and to go away. I dropped him in his house and thought I will pick up this man and rush him to the hospital. On my way back I found the person is missing. It was excess of alcohol or drug that he parked his bike by the road side and lay sprauled in the road. When he considered safe to drive back home he vanished.  My friends advised not to be so benevelent in helping people because you will land up in the police station as a witness and go to the station whenever they want or may have to go to the court to give evidence. Some smart cop may turn the table and say I only hit him and by the prick of conscience I am going around helping him. Such are the days. None can help.

Technology today

What to do, Mr.Author, the days are such that there is an innovation every day. If you want to keep pace with the changing world, you have to sacrifice. My semi automatic washing machine, about 12 year old still gives me good service. The repairman says the new models are not as good as these, you can continue to use it for some more time. I bought a Panasonic VCR for a heavy price. Now it is obsolete. Video cassettes are no where to be seen. Now they have DVDs of a different format. Each disc carries four to five films and is cheaper to buy the original version. Similarly computers, music systems, mobile phones, iPods have changed our lifestyle completely. Certainly you have togo for the latest technology if you want to enjoy life. Only thing you have to be careful about is to see that your old item is disposed of when you buy a new one. Otherwise you may have to find storing place for your old item also which is obsolete.

Please Believe Me

No, child, your amma knows you are pretending to have an ache. As the mother of the house she has to take care of the health of the entire family.
It is natural that you use your 'ache' as a tool to escape from school, or work entrusted by her, or your homework etc.
First thing the mother used to say against such pretentions is that girls dont get headaches before they are 15. It is not her fault. It is common with all mothers.
When the ache continued your appa took you to the doctor and got glasses for you.
Don't be sad that nobody believes you. Be brave. Your chances of telling this to your son/daughter is coming. Wait till then.

WHY NOT LEGALISE ‘ CORRUPTION’?

Corruption in India is various dimensions. An industrialist friend told me me that when you bribe somebody in Delhi, the person who receives the money returns the money if he is not able to do the favour. In Mumbai he does not demand heavy amounts as bribe, just a small amount so that the giver does not feel cheated even if his work is not done. In Chennai, he will not accept the bribe if the work is not done. In Kerala, he will accept the bribe and will not do the work.
For doing a favour asking for or accepting the bribe is understandable. In Kerala, they refuse to deliver the deadbody from the mortuary unless they are paid a hefty amount as bribe. If it is a case of postmortem, their demand is more. If the relatives of the dead are poor, they may have to sell some asset to pay the mortuary keeper. Recently they held back the deadbody of a small child for more than four days, because the parents of the child were not able to meet the demands of the mortuary keeper. They had to go to the Chief Minister and appealed to order the authorities to release the dead body so that the parents may be able to give a decent cremation to their offspring.
Corruption in Customes, police, sales tax, income tax and other govt. department is understandable. But doctors in medical college hospitals refuse to see patients unless they are paid hefty amounts before hand. Doctors do not even see those patients during their daily rounds or even see their charts. Criminals they are.

GURUVAYOOR OR GUCCI VALLEY

Why bother to come all the way to Guruvayoor if you are not willing to make a simple sacrifice.   You will make contribution to the temple, pay for all pujas and thulabharams, wait in the queue for taking prasadam, but a simple dress code you are not willing to observe. Tomorrow you will wear jeans, or midi, or mini, or something else and ask the stupid minister to allow this and the devaswam committee will have to accept and pass a resolution. Afterall the minister is interested in the money you offer. What does he care about the sanctity of the temple.  And you, will worship the lord only in churidar. Your mother and grandmother wore the traditional dress when they visit the temple and why not you.

Bride (groom) and Prejudice

Getting a girl married is indeed a great burden for the parents. Dowry, ornaments, vessels, dress, expenses for the function etc. Now a days, girls get good education, good job in good companies and earn good salaries.  Many of them earn more than the average boys. So the complex sets in. Both are in US but girl in higher position and earn better salary. The boy hesitates.  The girl also thinks twice. How can she get along with a husband who earns less. These are all practical problems. In our society where intermingling of boys and girls do not happen like in western countries or US, where arranged marriages alone take place, these problems are likely to happen. Cannot help.

A Sassy Response

I dont think this needs a response. She just asked to go elsewhere. It is but natural that if you dont like a person to ask that person to go elsewhere. It is ok.

Dharmapuri Case Judgement - Gujarat Rioters and Sabharwall killers Next?

In Gujarat, the rioters had a reason, the Godra incident,  for indulging in arson. But for burning down a excursion bus full of college students, the Dharmapuri rioters had no reason but out of mad impulse. The Chief Minister whose fans there were, kept the case pending for all these years. She is in no way better than them. She also should have been indicted by the court.

Noida Murders, Child-Abuse, & Mallika Effect

Our country is the land of Kamasutra. We have more porn in the form of wall paintings and statues in our old temples than anywhere in the world. But our culture is not based on these.  We are more matured and cultured people compared to the western world. Now in the form of apeing the west, we have changed our music and dance pattern.  Revealing s portion of the body is termed to be highly offensive and raging controversies hower around such incidents. This is nothing but results of copying the western culture. Soon nude shows will turn up in our country clubs and many more. Because of the left over of the basic culture in us we take offensive of the scenes shown in Sahara.
Killing the innocent children is dangerous. What excuse can you find for this act. Police did not register the complaints. Local authorities did not clean the sewage canal. But how could somebody kill a small child, and that too so mercilessly, dismembering the body and throwing it cut into small pieces. Can we compare this with any other incident in any part of the world. This is horrible and shocking. Kidnapping for ransom is understandable. But how much time he would have taken to cut the body into pieces and put them all into the bags and throw them into the ditch. Unimaginable!
Let Mallika dance around naked,  I dont mind. But this is unpardonable.
